SharePoint Site Templates in 90 Seconds: The Template Gallery

14 June 2026·5 min read

Standing up a polished SharePoint site from scratch is slow work. You create the site, then build out pages, navigation, lists, and web parts one by one — and by the time it looks the way you want, hours have disappeared. The Template Gallery in Sprocket Studio collapses that whole process into a couple of clicks: a curated library of professionally designed SharePoint sites you can apply to your own tenant in minutes.

This guide walks through how it works and how to apply your first template.

What the Template Gallery gives you

Rather than starting from a blank communication or team site, you browse a gallery of ready-made templates — intranets, knowledge bases, department hubs, and more — and apply the one that fits. The template brings its pages, structure, navigation, and Sprocket web parts with it, so you land on a working, good-looking site instead of an empty canvas.

Before you apply

There are two requirements:

  • Site Owner permissions on the site where you want to apply the template.
  • An active Sprocket licence for your organisation's SharePoint tenant.

It's also worth knowing up front that applying a template adds new pages, lists, and web parts to your site — so take a moment to review a template's details before you apply it.

How to apply a template

Step 1: Open the Template Gallery

Click the Sprocket Settings icon at the bottom left of your SharePoint site, then click Apply Template.

Step 2: Find your template

Browse, search, or filter to find the template you want. Click any template card to see more detail, including preview images and a description of what it includes.

Step 3: Review and apply

Review the preview images and description, click Apply Template, and confirm that you want to proceed.

Step 4: Wait for completion

A progress view shows you exactly what's happening as the template is applied. When it finishes, you'll see a success message — and a fully built site ready to customise.

Which template for which site?

Templates are designed for either Team Sites or Communication Sites. If a template isn't compatible with your site type, the Apply button will be disabled.

Site typeBest for
Team SiteTeam collaboration, shared documents, project workspaces
Communication SiteCompany announcements, news, broadcasting to a wide audience

Common questions

Will applying a template delete my existing content? No. Templates add new content without removing what's already there.

Can I undo a template application? There's no automatic undo, so you'd need to manually remove any content you didn't want. This is why it's worth reviewing the template details before applying.

Can I apply more than one template to the same site? Yes — just be aware that templates with similar content may create duplicates.

If a template ever fails to apply, the error message will explain why; you can hit Retry, or contact support if the problem continues.
